Angel in Disguise or Friendly Neighbor?

Last Spring, after seven years of marriage and renting an apartment, my husband and I finally bought our first home, a condo. My office allows employees to take leftover boxes from deliveries before they are thrown out. Once a week, I scoured each floor of the office in search of free boxes to start packing up our apartment. The timing had to be perfect: 1) the contents of the boxes had to be unpacked (there were days I stalked the delivery guy, waiting for him to unpack the boxes and put them in the designated area and 2) you had to get there before someone else did!

One day, I collected a lot of boxes of all sizes. I loaded up my flatbed cart and started heading home. I live in walking distance of work and had to walk a short distance to get the boxes home.

This day was particularly windy. I chased boxes down the street as they flew off my cart, at the same time hoping the other boxes on the cart would stay put. Instead of turning around and trying again later, my stubborn and determined spirit trudged ahead with one hand on the stack of boxes and one hand on the cart handle.  This was becoming very difficult. I started praying and asking the angels for help. “Please help me!” “Please stop the wind!” I shouted in my head.

I was almost home. I could see the front door in sight! All I had to do was get inside and I was home free! As an animal lover, I noticed a small cute dog outside my condo building, near the door I wanted to go in. His owner was an older gentleman with gray hair and piercing blue eyes. He opened the door for me and said, “I’ve been watching you a long time.” I didn’t think anything of it. I was happy to get inside and out of the wind and complete my mission. I figured he watched the entire fiasco.

Later, as I thought about his comment, I had a feeling he was one of my guardian angels, watching over me my entire life. In our community, I typically see the same neighbors, especially the ones with dogs, over and over again. I haven’t seen him since. Was he an angel in disguise to help me this day or just a friendly neighbor? I think it was the former. As Hebrews 13:2 says, “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”

I love this story! I think it was a guardian angel and he was waiting to make sure you got safely inside the building. What a beautiful story!! And I love the scripture at the end!!Reply
